Professor of Design, ELISAVA
Julia Benini is Professor of Design at ELISAVA, the Barcelona School of Design and Engineering. She co-directs the Master in Creative Process in partnership with the El Bulli Foundation.
Prior to joining ELISAVA, Julia served as a Design Director at IDEO.org, where she led the Design Research discipline and spread her passion for ethics, cross-cultural ethnography, and impact at scale. At IDEO.org, Julia worked on projects that empowered women and girls by increasing access to reproductive health services in Ethiopia, Kenya, Côte d’Ivoire, Benin, Burkina Faso, Senegal, and Bangladesh. She also worked on mobile financial services for the poor in Uganda and Tanzania, and youth community building in Guatemala.
A systems thinker, Julia has also helped IDEO teams deliver design strategies and services for for-profit clients in banking, consumer electronics, connected healthcare, higher education, car care, and the food industry. Before joining IDEO, Julia designed digital experiences and consumer electronics for Philips and Nokia. She holds a B.A. in Communications and an M.Sc. in Engineering from University of São Paulo, and a Professional Doctorate in User-System Interaction from Eindhoven University of Technology.
