Designing a plastic-free future: applying a systemic approach to foster a sustainable culture

Join this special workshop, organised by the Service Design Days in partnership with La Diseñería, a 2.0 from last year's amazing event! This interactive event - a combination of talks and a workshop - will take place on Saturday, October 19, 2024.

Can you imagine a future without plastics in Argentina? In an era where environmental social awareness seems to be growing, it's time to question the impact of our habits and rethink the ways of production and consumption we are immersed in. From our daily consumption to microplastics in our bodies, and even oceans, forests, and protected areas, plastic pollution has shown that it can reach everywhere, affecting people's quality of life, health, and environment.

To solve such a complex problem, a systemic approach is necessary. In this workshop, we will seek to map the plastic industry in Argentina, with an interdisciplinary focus, to understand how this system operates and where and how it makes more sense to intervene to generate an impact.

How to turn the tide and avoid an even worse scenario in the near and distant future? How to promote sustainable and diversified production practices? How to address the health impacts of plastic consumption through nutrition education, healthcare, and policies that promote healthier habits? How to support the development of a circular economy in the production system that minimises waste and greenhouse gas emissions?

As we strive to become active agents of change in our world, how can we reimagine and reshape the local norms of consumption to better align with the needs of our society and the planet?

This Service Design Days Satellite conference invites designers, policymakers and creative minds alike to debate and collaborate to understand how to mitigate the harmful impact of the plastics industry and propose a more sustainable future through the lens of design.

This event serves as an opportunity to pioneer strategies and foster cooperation among multiple stakeholders, such as the government, industry, civil society, and communities, to pave the way for a more sustainable, equitable, and resilient production system in Argentina
